Wells Grey is by the Kwpn Stallion, "Darwin", who is a son of Iron Spring Farm's deceased sire, Roemer, one of the most important producers of dressage horses in the US and who is still in 18th place on the list of SOBA Dressage Sires. An FEI level dressage stallion, Darwin (Roemer/Zonnatettie/Pion), owned by Legends Farm and ridden by Louise Tomik , was named the leading sire of FEI level dressage horses in the US for the 1999 competition year, according to the Sport Horse Owners and Breeders Association's annual Dressage Sires Report.
Darwin
Darwin finished third in his
performance
test in 1988, scoring nines for his training report, his temperament,
working
in the saddle and his trot. The jury described him as a more than
sufficiently
talented jumper and cross country horse, showing, in addition great
promise in
dressage, which is exactly what can be expected from a Roemer son. That
promise
has been fulfilled, as Darwin
became champion on the 1989 and 1990 stallion
dressage competition category A under Leida Strijk. He was also
the champion of
the following years, in the heaviest category. In one of the six
ZZ-level
dressage competitions for the Championship of Gelderland, Darwin came second;
he won the other five years in a row. He then went on to fulfill a
successful
International Grand-Prix career before moving to North America in 1998
