Wells Grey is by the Kwpn Stallion, "Darwin", who is a son of Iron Spring Farm's deceased sire, Roemer, one of the most important producers of dressage horses in the US and who is still in 18th place on the list of SOBA Dressage Sires.   An FEI level dressage stallion, Darwin (Roemer/Zonnatettie/Pion), owned by Legends Farm and ridden by Louise Tomik , was named the leading sire of FEI level dressage horses in the US for the 1999 competition year, according to the Sport Horse Owners and Breeders Association's annual Dressage Sires Report.

Darwin finished third in his performance test in 1988, scoring nines for his training report, his temperament, working in the saddle and his trot. The jury described him as a more than sufficiently talented jumper and cross country horse, showing, in addition great promise in dressage, which is exactly what can be expected from a Roemer son.  That promise has been fulfilled, as Darwin became champion on the 1989 and 1990 stallion dressage competition category A under Leida Strijk.  He was also the champion of the following years, in the heaviest category.  In one of the six ZZ-level dressage competitions for the Championship of Gelderland, Darwin came second; he won the other five years in a row. He then went on to fulfill a successful International Grand-Prix career before moving to North America in 1998

Darwin's sire Roemer is the invincible leader of the stallion dressage index, which position he gained through the efforts of amongst others Roemer H, Windsor, Apollo, Amoro, Walerno and Zwingley. Although Roemer is mainly known as an eminent producer of dressage horses, he has contributed to show jumping as well by means of his famous products Winston N, Poli d'Or, Super Mossel Pd, Zeva and Bianca R.

Roemer, who had passed his performance test with a 10 for temperament, was given the predicate 'keur' in 1988 due to his excellent sport and breeding results.

Darwin is out of 'ster' Zonnatettie, a descendent of the illustrious Tetti lineage. Zonnatettie is a daughter of Pion, international show-jumper under Rob Ehrens and sire of six approved sons. Pion is the influential 'keur' Abgar xx (by Abrenant xx), who takes a twenty-eighth place in the stallion jumping index and who sired, amongst others, the great Boomerang ridden by Eddy Macken and the approved stallion Olympic Treffer.

Lynda Alicki-Gilchrist's Impressario, USDF Horse of the Year at Prix St. Georges, as well as Susan Miller's Inkognito (now deceased) who competed at Prix St. Georges, but also finished 5th for USDF at Fourth Level. Julie Taylor's Intendo (born Iwan, PSG and Int. 1) was Darwin's third FEI offspring. Darwin ranked second on the FEI sires list in 1998, just behind another KWPN stallion, Voltaire. At the lower levels Darwin is represented by another USDF Champion, Dominique Culham's Matisse, 1999 USDF Horse of the Year at First Level.
